The Natural Advantages of Jute
Jute is a long vegetable fibre which can be spun into strong threads. It isn’t as widely-known in the West as it is in India, but jute has been used for hundreds of years to make hessian and burlap, and is now becoming popular in its own right. Known as ‘the golden fibre’, jute boasts numerous natural plus points which make it perfect for an eco-friendly company like Cotton Bag Co.
Completely Biodegradable
When you buy a jute bag, you’ll never have to worry about it spending decades sitting in a landfill. While plastic bags can take thousands of years to decompose, drifting into sewage systems and our natural landscape as they do so, jute decomposes incredibly quickly. In fact, this usually takes place within a few weeks or months. Of course, you won’t be needing to send your jute bag to the dump any time soon – not only is this a highly durable material, it can also be recycled multiple times.
Soft and Strong
Jute might be able to decompose in a matter of weeks, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t durable. This is an extremely strong fibre which is celebrated for its longevity – so your jute bag will last and last. It’s even UV resistant, and stretches only 0.5% from its stable form when put under pressure, meaning that heavy items won’t cause your bag to lose shape. However, while jute is strong – and often used to make rougher fabrics – jute bags are naturally soft and smooth to the touch.
Low Impact
Only cotton is farmed more than jute in the Asian subcontinent, but it actually requires less attention, and no pesticide treatment. It’s also cheap to grow – making it perfect for developing communities to farm – and can even thrive on waste land. Multiple plantings of jute can actually rehabilitate that land until it’s healthy enough for other crops, and the short growth cycle ensures that this can happen quickly.
